# The Names of God: word cards

**In one sentence:** learn the Hebrew alphabet by learning the names God gave Himself, one card at a
time, until by the last card you have read all 22 letters.

> ✝️ Exodus 3:14 (ESV)
>
> 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel: 'I AM has
> sent me to you.'"

God did not leave His people to guess at Him. At the burning bush He told Moses His name, and through
the rest of the Old Testament He kept adding to it: the God who sees Hagar in the wilderness, the LORD
who provides on the mountain, the LORD who heals, the LORD our righteousness. Each name is something
He has shown Himself to be, so learning them is learning what He has promised to be for you. The last
card is the name He gave His Son, Jesus, *Yeshua*: "the LORD saves". [The Names of God](https://the-way.lewy.au/god/names-of-god/)
is the study behind the cards: where each name was given, to whom, and what it promised. The
[Names of Jesus word cards](https://the-way.lewy.au/hebrew/names-of-jesus-cards/) begin where this deck ends, at *Yeshua*.

## How the deck teaches the letters

The cards are in a deliberate order. The first, <span dir="rtl">אֵלִי</span> (*Eli*, "my God"),
has three letters. Each card after it adds one to three new ones, and the front of the card shows
which, with a bar for how many of the 22 you have met so far. By *Tov*, "good", the twentieth card,
you have them all, and the last card is the name of Jesus. The order and the counts are worked out
from the Hebrew on the cards, so they cannot drift from what is printed.

Use the deck alongside [The Hebrew Alphabet](https://the-way.lewy.au/hebrew/alphabet/): when a card introduces a letter, find it
in the table, say its sound, then read the word.

## Reading a card

- **The front** has the name as the Hebrew Bible writes it, vowel points included, and beneath it the
same letters in **Paleo-Hebrew**, the script Israel wrote before the exile.
- **The back** has the reading in syllables with the stressed one underlined, the meaning, the verse
that reveals the name (ESV), and a line marked **Today** on the word in modern Hebrew.
- **The name of God**, <span dir="rtl">יְהוָה</span>, has no reading on the card. It says *read
Adonai*, which Jewish readers were already saying in its place by the time of Jesus.
[How Hebrew Is Pronounced](https://the-way.lewy.au/hebrew/pronunciation/#the-name-of-god) explains why.
- **Names as the verse says them.** Two names are better known in another form. Exodus 15:26 says
<span dir="rtl">יְהוָה רֹפְאֶךָ</span>, "the LORD your healer", which is popularly shortened to
"Jehovah Rapha"; Genesis 22:14 says <span dir="rtl">יְהוָה יִרְאֶה</span>, "the LORD will see to
it", popularly "Jehovah Jireh". The card prints the verse's words and gives the popular form
  beneath.

## Learning a card

**On screen**, choose **Practise on screen** above the cards. It shows one card at a time: read the
word, show the reading to check yourself, then mark it **Again** or **I read it**. It introduces
three new cards a day, in the deck's order, and brings each card back when it is due: the next
day, then after three days, a week, two weeks and a month. **Hear it** reads the word aloud in your
device's Hebrew voice, where it has one, and always says *Adonai* for the name of God. Your progress
is kept in this browser only.

**On paper**, take one card a day. Read the front aloud, letter by letter, then turn it over to check the
reading and learn the meaning. Each time you read it correctly on a later day, tick a circle: **1,
2, 4, 7, 14 and 30 days** after you learn it. Widening gaps like these are what fix a word in
long-term memory.

## How to print

1. Choose **Flashcards** for the word on the front and everything else on the back, or **Cards**
   for one-sided cards.
2. Print at **A4, 100 % / actual size**, with **margins set to none** and **headers and footers
   off**. Turn **background graphics** on.
3. For flashcards, print **double-sided, flip on long edge**. The backs are mirrored so each lands
   behind its own front.
4. Cut on the dashed lines. Untick **Paleo-Hebrew** or **Modern Hebrew note** before printing to
   leave them off.

Each card is 95 × 67.5 mm, eight to a sheet. Empty places on the last sheet print as blank ruled
cards for a name of your own.

Every Hebrew word on these cards is checked against STEPBible.org's Translators Amalgamated Hebrew
OT (TAHOT, CC BY), which follows the Leningrad Codex, and takes its syllables, stress and Strong's
number from it. Cantillation marks are removed for legibility. The Paleo-Hebrew is the same
letters drawn in the Unicode Phoenician script. Scripture quotations marked ESV are from the ESV®
Bible, © 2001 by Crossway, used by permission (see [Copyright & Scripture
Permissions](https://the-way.lewy.au/about/copyright/)), and each is checked against the ESV text before it is
printed.
