# Writing sheets

**In one sentence:** print a script, trace each letter three times, then write it four times on your
own, and the shapes will stay with you longer than any amount of looking at them.

Israel was told to keep God's words close enough to write them: "You shall write them on the
doorposts of your house and on your gates" (Deuteronomy 6:9, ESV). Writing a letter by hand is the
quickest way to learn to recognise it.

## How to use a sheet

1. **Read the row right to left**, as Hebrew is written. The first letter, with its name and sound
   underneath, is the model.
2. **Trace the three grey letters**, then write the letter four times in the empty places.
3. **Keep to the guide lines.** Most letters sit between the two darker lines and hang from the top
one. Lamed (ל) reaches up to the top faint line; qof (ק) and the final forms ך, ן, ף and ץ reach
   down to the bottom one.
4. **One sheet a day** is enough. Say each letter's name and sound aloud as you write it.

The **Names of God** sheets put each name from the [word cards](https://the-way.lewy.au/hebrew/names-of-god-cards/) in square
script, cursive and Paleo-Hebrew, with space to copy each beside its model. [Three
Scripts](https://the-way.lewy.au/hebrew/three-scripts/) explains where each script comes from.

## How to print

Choose a set, then print at **A4, 100 % / actual size**, with **margins set to none**, **headers and
footers off** and **background graphics on** (the guide lines are drawn as background). Only the
set you have chosen prints.

The cursive is set in [Gveret Levin](https://github.com/AlefAlefAlef/gveret-levin) by AlefAlefAlef,
the square script in Noto Serif Hebrew and the Paleo-Hebrew in Noto Sans Phoenician, all under the

Masoretic text (STEPBible TAHOT, CC BY).
