Proverbs: a chapter a day
What this page is
Personal reflections, not a study. Proverbs has 31 chapters, so it reads a chapter a day for a month. These are the verses that stopped me on the way through, and the notes I made about them. For the exegetical treatment of the book, see the Proverbs commentary; for what the whole book teaches about wisdom, see Wisdom.
Reading it straight through, one thing kept surfacing: wisdom is a road, and the LORD is both its starting point and the one directing your steps along it. Almost every verse below turned out to be about that.
Quotations are ESV; each reference links to the passage at Blue Letter Bible.
Chapters 1-9 — a father's instruction
Proverbs opens with a father pleading with a son, and the plea has one subject: there are two roads out of here, and only one of them ends in life.
Proverbs 1 — the way of the righteous and the wicked
✝️ Proverbs 1:7 (ESV)
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
- Our introduction to a binary message on the way of wisdom.
- Life with wisdom.
- Death without wisdom.
- Wisdom can be chosen by anyone. It is never withheld from those who seek it.
Proverbs 8 — the blessings of wisdom
✝️ Proverbs 8:35-36 (ESV)
35 For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD, 36 but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.
- The blessing of wisdom, stated as plainly as it ever gets.
- Death is the outcome of not pursuing wisdom, and the one who refuses her does the injury to himself.
Proverbs 9 — the way of wisdom
✝️ Proverbs 9:10 (ESV)
10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
Wisdom depends on knowing God and His nature. This is the first step on the road to life — you cannot take the second before you have taken this one.
Chapters 10-29 — the proverbs of Solomon
From chapter 10 the pleading gives way to the sayings themselves, two lines at a time.
Proverbs 10 — the path to life runs through correction
✝️ Proverbs 10:16-17 (ESV)
16 The wage of the righteous leads to life, the gain of the wicked to sin. 17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
- Listening to reproof and instruction is wise.
- To reject reproof is to cause not only yourself to fall, but others with you.
Proverbs 11 — what honour is worth, and what riches are not
Three verses in this chapter set worldly appearance against what God actually honours.
✝️ Proverbs 11:22 (ESV)
22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.
- Such a contrast to the godly woman of Proverbs 31.
- Do not be deceived by outward appearances.
✝️ Proverbs 11:16 (ESV)
16 A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches.
- A sound counterpart to verse 22: the gracious woman is honoured, and godly honour is implied.
- Violence may appear to bring riches, but they are worldly and rotten beside that honour.
✝️ Proverbs 11:28 (ESV)
28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
- Confirming how little worldly riches are worth toward eternal life.
- Righteousness is what counts there — the attitude of the heart toward God and toward our neighbour.
Proverbs 15 — the wise tongue and the wise ear
✝️ Proverbs 15:4 (ESV)
4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
The ESV footnotes "gentle" here as healing — the tongue that mends rather than the tongue that merely softens.
✝️ Proverbs 15:28 (ESV)
28 The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
✝️ Proverbs 15:31 (ESV)
31 The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.
A whole chapter on how the heart of the wise bears words of good fruit, and grows ears that listen to instruction and reproof.
Listen with love. Ponder, and answer in love.
Proverbs 16 — the most excellent way
✝️ Proverbs 16:20 (ESV)
20 Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.
- Proverbs 16 is central in position and in thought.
- The benefit of wisdom is established by the LORD.
- The wise are guided by Him.
(The ESV footnotes "the word" here as matter — giving thought to the thing in front of you.)
Proverbs 20 — how can I understand my way?
✝️ Proverbs 20:24 (ESV)
24 A man's steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way?
- It is a blessed thing that the LORD directs your path — down to the steps.
- We may think our paths should go a certain way. As we submit to the LORD, those ways become far more assured.
- As we pray "your will be done", we are asking Him to direct them.
Cross-references worth reading alongside it:

- ✝️ Psalm 139:1-12 (ESV) — He knows the way before you walk it
- ✝️ Romans 8:28 (ESV) — He works it together for good
